WRAP UP: The “HELP me name this picture” contest
Congratulations to Carol Devine of Chicago for submitting the chosen title “ … Beyond”, in my “HELP me name this picture” contest for a title of one of my images. For the selected entry, Carol receives an 11 X 14 signed limited edition print.
“… Beyond” is a puddle shot I captured on May 1, 2012 of a portion of the mural “you know what you should do”. Created by muralist Jeff Zimmerman (pictured right), a native of Chicago who has achieved national and international recognition for his large-scale murals. This incredible work is on the entire east wall at the Oak Street Beach underpass (of LSD – aka Lake Shore Drive) leading up to the beach.
I first met Jeff as he was planning and painting for an opening, "The God Particle", at the Chicago Cultural Center in October 2010. On the right are a few of my images of Jeff making it (so to speak-ha).
Familiarizing himself with a community allows its members to breathe authenticity and life into his paintings, as was his intent here. When Elysabeth Alfano of Fear No ART asks Jeff in an interview “How is it that you decide on which faces to paint?”, Jeff replies:
They’re not models … I get these wonderful portraits by approaching, almost randomly, people as they pass by. When I include a regular person, an everyday Joe from the street, those faces and those people in the mural are what give the mural its Soul.” - Jeff Zimmerman
Learn the actual name of that particular model Jeff used for my “… Beyond” in that interview.
Many thanks to the over 60 people (quantity, not age – ha) for their suggestions and for being part of my process! Connecting with Jeff who’s been “running around like a loco these days”, many thanks to him for his share of “… Beyond” being a “cool shot”.
